Last month, Mindy Tran parked her Honda Accord into her garage and got out, when the car started rolling -- with her twin toddlers buckled inside! As the car lurched forward, before it rolled down her steep driveway towards traffic, Tran dove into action, using her body as a speed bump to slow it down enough before one of her neighbors ran over to help.

Immigration Doc 'Documented' Will Get Theatrical Release Prior to CNN Airing

The film, which chronicles Jose's experience as an undocumented immigrant and an activist for immigration reform, will be released theatrically and digitally, opening at the Village East Cinema in New York on May 2 and the Landmark Regent in Los Angeles on May 9. It will then air on CNN on June 29.

If you've been following the tragic news out of Austin, then you've heard about the suspected drunken driver who plowed through a crowd outside a nightclub at the South By Southwest music festival last week, killing two and injuring twenty-two others. A third victim died from her injuries this morning.

Third person dies after SXSW collisions

26-year-old Sandy Thuy Le had been on life support in critical condition since the accident occurred. She was with a group of friends standing outside The Mohawk nightclub last Thursday when she was hit by a car that crashed through a barricade. 27-year-old Jamie West and 35-year-old Steven Craenmehr were killed that night.

More than half of Sikh school children are bullied

"Go Home, Terrorist": A Report on the Bullying of Sikh American School Children



Last week, the Sikh Coalition released a groundbreaking national report on the endemic bullying of Sikh school children in America. The report was released at a briefing in the U.S. Capitol Building organized by the Congressional Anti-Bullying Caucus, the American Sikh Congressional Caucus, and the Sikh Coalition.

"Go Home, Terrorist": A Report on the Bullying of Sikh American School Children

The report found that the majority of Sikh children, just over 50%, endure school bullying. Even worse, over two-thirds of Sikh children report that they are bullied in school. The report is based on surveys and focus groups of over 700 Sikh school children and interviews of over 50 Sikh students in four metropolitan areas: Seattle, Indianapolis, Boston, and Fresno during 2012 and 2013.

The report cites the need for federal data on the bullying of Sikh school children to better target efforts to solve the issue. In addition, the absence of or negative representation of Sikhs in school textbooks nationwide is cited by the report as an opportunity to better combat or mitigate school bullying.

Catch the world premiere of National Film Society's action comedy webseries



It's time. If you're in the Bay Area, you're invited to the world premiere of the action comedy web series Awesome Asian Bad Guy, presented as part of CAAMFest 2014. It screen Thursday, March 20 at the Sundance Kabuki Cinemas in San Francisco, and Friday, March 21 at the Oakland Museum of California.

Follow National Film Society -- our friends Patrick Epino and Stephen Dypiangco -- as they are tasked with recruiting a team of washed-up Asian action movie villains to take down a notorious crime lord. Starring Tamlyn Tomita, Yuji Okumoto, Al Leong, Randall Park, Aaron Takahashi, Dante Basco and George Cheung, it's a fun romp full of wacky gags and pop culture nostalgia.

49-year-old Young Lee, a kickboxer turned architect turned yogurt shop entrepreneur, was convicted of assault with a deadly weapon for the June 2011 attack on Donald Bolding. The altercation apparently started when Bolding, who was panhandling on the side of the road, flashed a sexually explicit tattoo at Lee's car.

Awww yeah. John Cho's got a new TV gig. The Star Trek and Harold & Kumar star, last seen in a recurring role on Fox's Sleepy Hollow, has been cast as the male lead in the new ABC comedy pilot Selfie.

The single-camera comedy, from Suburgatory creator Emily Kapnek, centers on Eliza Dooley, a self-obsessed twentysomething social media star who is more concerned with "likes" than being liked. Cho will play her co-worker Henry, a self-assured marketing expert who decides to "re-market" Eliza's bad reputation.

Yeah, it's a modern take on My Fair Lady. And John Cho is Henry Higgins!

What. Did. I. Just. Watch? I've been trying to summon the proper words after watching this bizarre, crazy-ass music video for "Turn Down for What" by DJ Snake and Lil Jon. Initial reaction: ouch.

The video, directed by Daniels, features an Asian dude with an invincible, uncontrollable crotch that appears to be possessed by unnatural forces... compelling him to literally tear down the ceiling and lead the entire building in a flailing, face-melting, frenzied celebration of shaking ya ass. It's disturbing, mesmerizing and hilarious.

And I'm not kidding about the face-melting:

Thousands gather to mourn department veteran Nicholas Lee



In Los Angeles, thousands gathered at a memorial service to mourn and pay their last respects to a decorated veteran LAPD officer who was killed in the line duty in a traffic accident last week.

Fallen LAPD Officer Nicholas Lee remembered

40-year-old Nicholas Lee, a 16-year department veteran, was killed after his patrol car collided with a commercial dump truck at an intersection in Beverly Hills. It hasn't been determined what caused the crash, but officials are looking at whether the truck had mechanical problems.

Lee, a husband and father of two, is remembered as respected officer and a devoted family man.

The Strange Reign of Arthur Chu comes to end. Respect.

Gotta give some props to Jeopardy! champ Arthur Chu. On Wednesday night, the so-called "villain" of the perennial game show made his exit, ending a controversial, much-publicized 11-game winning streak. When all was said and done, Arthur walked away from the podium with nearly $300,000.

It was a glorious run, perhaps mostly notably marked by Arthur's aggressive, unorthodox playing strategy, which drew the ire of the quiz show's traditionalists and general everyday haters. The best part? Arthur never took shit from anybody, hopping on Twitter to strike back at critics with his trademark wit and DGAF attitude.

We loved it. During a good part of his badass run, my comedian pal Jenny Yang and I virtually gathered Arthur's devotees ("The Chu Crew") for live-tweet sessions of each game using the hashtag #ChuOnThis. Yeah, we're a bunch of nerds, and we had a blast. Thank you, Arthur, for dropping knowledge and good times.

And yes, Arthur will be back for Jeopardy's Tournament of Champions. The Chu Crew will be ready.

Giant Robot: 20 Years Art X Mags Exhibition

Damn, it really has been twenty years. Giant Robot began in 1994 as a zine which soon became a full-fledged magazine. GR shuttered print publication a couple of years ago, but it still exists as a website, retailer and art gallery. Over the last two decades, the brand has become a beacon for Asian pop culture and beyond.

To celebrate its 20th anniversary, Giant Robot presents 20 Years Art X Mags Exhibition, running March 15 to April 2 at GR2 in Los Angeles. And if you're in the Bay Area mark your calendars for the SuperAwesome: Art and Giant Robot exhibition at the Oakland Museum of California, April 19 to July 27.

This week in San Antonio, a group of spring breakin' college fraternity brothers were arrested for trespassing into SeaWorld after hours in a possible attempt to take photos with the animals. That's right. Animal selfies.

According to police, 23-year-old Duc Thien Nguyen and Huy Quan Mai, apparently students at the University of Houston, were part of a group that scaled the walls SeaWorld San Antonio, broke into a storage area to eat ice cream, and unsuccessfully tried to find animals to take photos with. Three other students got away.

Hudson Yang to star as Eddie Huang in 'Far East Orlando'

ABC comedy pilot based on the memoir 'Fresh Off The Boat'



Holy cow. It's official. Fresh Off The Boat -- now known as Far East Orlando -- has found its kid Eddie Huang... and he happens to be one of our peoples. 10-year-old Hudson Yang, son of Wall Street Journal columnist (and close friend to this blog) Jeff Yang, has been cast in the lead role of the ABC comedy pilot.

Far East Orlando, written and produced by Nahnatchka Khan and based on Eddie Huang's memoir Fresh Off The Boat, follows an Asian American family that moves from multi-ethnic Washington DC to an all-white suburb in Orlando, and the culture shock that ensues. Hudson will play young Eddie, circa 1994.

A network TV show about an Asian American family? So hell yeah, we've been following casting news pretty closely. We learned last month that Randall Park and Constance Wu had been cast as Eddie and his parents, while a casting call was circulated far and wide to find the right boys to play Eddie and his brothers.

But before we completely lose him to the pop stratosphere, he's returning to the United States this month for a four-city West Coast Tour, opening for Canadian artist Wanting. The tour kicks off next week at the House of Blues in Los Angeles:

Hari Kondabolu's 'Waiting For 2042'

Officially boasting the greatest album cover ever



YESSSSSS. One of my favorite comedians Hari Kondabolu has released his debut comedy album Waiting for 2042, out now from Kill Rock Stars. Officially boasting the greatest album cover art ever, the title refers to the year 2042, when the U.S. Census Bureau projects that white people will become the minority in this country.

I've been a fan of his comedy for a while, and this Hari doing what he does best, dropping comedy truth bombs about race, politics and pop culture -- you know, all the stuff I love. Here's a preview of a couple of his bits. You can also get a good sense of his set from the tracklist:

Hey, can someone put me in a music video? Because really, it seems like anyone can be the star of their own music video... for the right price. The latest pop star wannabe to fall prey to producer Patrice Wilson -- the mastermind behind Rebecca Black's "Friday" and that godawful "Chinese food" song -- is 10-year-old Grace Liu, who just dropped the internet's newest audio visual train wreck, "Get In My Car."

Goonies Data Retro Action Figure

Just like the classic Kenner action figures of yesteryear



Nice. Here's another one for your action figure collection. I'm really digging this super cool "ReAction figure" of Data from The Goonies by Funko and Super7. Data, of course, is the loveably brave, haphazardly tech-savvy treasure-hunting hero played Jonathan Ke Quan in the 1985 adventure movie classic.

The 3 3/4-inch figure features five points of articulation and includes a "Pinchers of Peril" chattering teeth accessory. It's not the most detailed Data figure out there -- that would probably be the 7-inch figure from Mezco -- but I love the retro modeling and packaging, like the classic Kenner figures of yesteryear.

Cecilia Chung named 'Woman of the Year' by California Assembly

Assemblyman Phil Ting honors transgender health advocate and civil rights leader



Congratulations to transgender health advocate and civil rights leader Cecilia Chung, who was one of three transgender women recognized by the California state Assembly this week as part of the Legislature's "Woman of the Year" celebration, honoring their important work towards breaking down barriers and fighting for equality.

During the annual Woman of the Year celebration, a woman from each Assembly District is honored in the State Capitol. On Monday, Assemblyman Phil Ting (D-San Francisco) honored Chung, who was introduced on the Assembly Floor and received a resolution recognizing her achievements.

Chung is currently a senior advisor for the Transgender Law Center, a health commissioner at the San Francisco Department of Public Health and a member of the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS. She also plays a leadership role in international organizations, including the Global Network of People Living with HIV (GNP+) and the Sero Project. Her notable "firsts" include:

Hot sauce lovers! If you're in Southern California, you are invited to check out L.A. Heat: Taste-Changing Condiments, a new art exhibition inspired by two of America's leading hot sauce brands, Huy Fong Sriracha and Tapatio. It runs March 13 - July 12 at the Chinese American Museum in downtown Los Angeles.

Do you like it spicy? The exhibition is the brainchild of CAM Interim Executive Director and Curator Steven Y. Wong, who challenged local artists to create works with the hot sauce products in mind. The result is a collection of thirty imaginative pieces in a variety of mediums.

Kawehi, where have you been all my music-loving life? Several folks have passed along this mind-blowing cover of Nirvana's "Heart-Shaped Box" by singer/songwriter Kawehi. It was apparently created out of an evening of messing around with loop tests and multiple glasses of wine... but then the internet got a hold of it and boom. A legion of new fans -- myself included. Haven't had a chance to post something about this, but I am way weirded out by this movie news... Sony Pictures is making a horror film based on the mysterious death of Canadian tourist Elisa Lam, whose body was found inside a rooftop water tank in downtown Los Angeles.

Mysterious death of Elisa Lam inspires Sony Pictures film project

Lam, 21, was missing for several weeks before her body was discovered on the roof of the Cecil Hotel. Her death was ruled an accidental drowning, but hotel elevator surveillance video that showed Lam acting oddly -- plus the hotel's infamous past -- fueled wild internet conspiracy theories about how she died.

The Bringing, a horror script written by Brandon and Philip Murphy, is inspired by the strange circumstances behind Lam's death, and the grisly, sordid history of the Cecil Hotel:

How to Stage Your Show Without Being Super Racist

Some "friendly unsolicited pointers" for the Lantern Theater Company's production of 'Julius Caesar'



In Philadelphia, the Lantern Theater Company is currently wrapping up the run of its annual Shakespearean offering, The Tragedy of Julius Caesar. This time, they've put a twist on the great tragedy by changing up the Roman Republic and setting the play in medieval Japan. That's great, except there isn't a whole lot in this production that's legitimately Japanese -- most notably, a glaring lack of Japanese actors.

Japanese Actor Makoto Hirano Calls Lantern Theater's Julius Caesar Racist

Dance theater artist (and actual Japanese person) Makoto Hirano saw the play, and it did not sit well with him. So he drafted a letter to the Lantern Theater Company outlining some "friendly unsolicited pointers" on How to Stage Your Show Without Being Super Racist. PROTIP: "DON'T say you were inspired by feudal Japan and then not cast any Japanese actors." Seems like that should have been a big one.

For the last few weeks 80-20 and other conservative organizations have spread lies, fears, and hate about what California Senate Constitutional Amendment 5 (SCA 5) is. Their mobilization against SCA 5 is showing that Asian Americans can successfully fight for their interests. But in the process, they're pushing misconceptions that poison this important policy debate over affirmative action, racial equity and justice in public higher education.

There are two key ways the anti-affirmative action haters are shoveling a lot of bullsh*t about SCA 5. First, they claim SCA 5 is "anti-Asian." Second, they hold an assumption that tests and grades are race neutral, reliable, and the only valid considerations in selective admissions practices. In the meantime while they're too busy in a fear mongering campaign, they're missing a great opportunity to really fight to expand college opportunity for all of the highly qualified students in the state.

San Antonio food truck's 'offensive name' ruffles feathers

CockAsian, owned and operated by chef Candie Yoder, specializes in "Asian Fusion" -- mostly Korean fare, including her most popular dish, Korean Fried Chicken. But the truck's name and branding has apparently ruffled some feathers, and she has been barred from rolling in and setting up shop in Port San Antonio.

It should be noted that Yoder is not Asian. In fact, she claims that the truck's name is a wordy play on the fact that she's a white woman cooking Asian food. Yeah, that's clever.

Documentary webseries and music album chronicles Dan Matthews' return to Korea



Last summer, musician Dan Matthews embarked on a journey that changed his life. Dan, a Korean American adoptee who grew up in California, went on a search for his birth parents... and found them. He not only tracked down his biological family in South Korea, where he traveled to meet them for the first time, Dan also discovered that he also has a twin brother. Needless to say, it was an identity-altering trip.

And the cameras were rolling. aka Dan is a documentary webseries following Dan's journey to Korea to attend the International Korean Adoptee Association, performing his first live concert in Korea, and of course, his reunion with his birth family. Maj. Kurt Chew-Een Lee, First Asian American U.S. Marine Officer, dies at 88

Decorated hero of the Korean War



Major Kurt Chew-Een Lee, the first Asian American officer in the U.S. Marine Corps, who was decorated for his legendary service in the Korean War, has died this week at his home in Washington DC. He was 88.

The son of Chinese immigrants, Maj. Lee was a gung-ho Marine who climbed the ranks and broke barriers during a time strong racial prejudice. A recipient of the Navy Cross, the Marines' second-highest honor -- really, experts say deserved higher -- Maj. Lee is perhaps best known for his fierce bravery in combat during a assault by Communist Chinese forces in Korea on the night of November 2-3, 1950.

The 2010 documentary Uncommon Courage: Breakout at Chosin, recounts how Lee led 500 men through a nighttime blizzard and rebuffed an attack by enemy forces to save 8,000 Marines from capture at Chosin Reservoir.

CAAMFest 2014, March 13-23

Bay Area film fans, if you haven't already heard, CAAMFest 2014 is going down next week, March 13-23. Presented by the Center for Asian American Media, and now in its 32nd year, the festival is an 11-day celebration of Asian and Asian American storytelling in film, and new ventures in music and food.

I got to a lot of film festivals, and CAAMFest is one of my favorites. I have personal roots with this festival, and I try to attend every year. Going to CAAMFest is like coming home. Once again, they've put together a top-notch program. CAAMFest 2014 celebrates contributions of Asians and Asian Americans in media by paying tribute to significant benchmarks in history and by showcasing the trailblazers of the 2st century.

The festivities kick off on Thursday, March 13 with the Opening Night screening of Ham Tran's How To Fight in Six Inch Heels. Check out the rockin' festival trailer:

Seniors thwart robbery with a cane to the crotch

Badass neighbors help 82-year-old fight off would-be robber



BOOM. Feel sting of justice, ya thievin' evildoer! And by sting, I mean that pounding pain in your genitals. This is an awesome story out of Toronto about a group of seniors who helped their elderly neighbor fight off a would-be robber, subduing him, most notably, with a devastating cane to the crotch.

Last week, a man followed 82-year-old Mrs. Ye into her apartment building, purportedly offering to help carry her groceries, then attempted to rob her. But he messed with the wrong lady. It became a neighborhood affair, with several folks -- including 71-year-old Chin-Hua Chen and a homeless man -- jumping into the fray to help Mrs. Ye.

But it was 71-year-old Jane Harris, armed with a cane, who struck the suspect in the genitals with her cane -- the crushing blow that apparently ended the altercation. That'll do it:

Sears employee fired for racist remark

"Let me guess, you just came off the boat?"



Retail racism! Caught on camera... This one comes to us from our neighbors to the north, where Sears Canada has fired an employee for making a racist remark during an altercation with an Asian customer.

The racially charged incident went down at the Sears location in the Polo Park Shopping Centre in Winnipeg. During the heated exchange, which was caught on a video and posted to Facebook, the employee says to the customer, "Let me guess, you came off the boat?" Oh hellllll no.

Incensed by the derogatory remark, the customer goes OFF, unleashing a tirade on the guy and calling him, among other things, a "racist fuck." He clearly wants to kick his ass. Can you really blame him? Check it out:

Holy smokes. I've been meaning to post something about Wong Fu Productions' crowdfunding campaign for their first feature film, only to check their Indiegogo and discover that they've already reached their ambitious $200,000 goal with 15 days left to go. Whaaaaaat. That is the power of Wong Fu.

Yes, after years of making short films, music videos and other content for YouTube, Wesley, Ted, Philip and friends, popularly known as Wong Fu Productions, are making their first official feature-length movie.

The untitled dramedy is set in a world where all relationship activity is documented and monitored by a government entity, and follows couples navigating different stages of relationships. I've read some early drafts of the script and I can only describe it as perfect Wong Fu. Fans are going to love it.

Just another "Asian Guy" getting coffee

Joseph is the latest recipient of a racial receipt


Got this passed along to me from a reader named Joseph, who became the most recent recipient of a racial receipt. What the heck is that? Oh, it's more common than you might realize.

You know when you go to a fast food or coffee joint like Starbucks, and they take your name to identify your order? Sometimes, your servers get lazy with the name-taking, and take it upon themselves to rename you with terms like "Ching" and "Chong." Or maybe they get creative, and bestow a title like "Lady Chinky Eyes." We've seen it happen enough that we can give it a name. The Racial Receipt.

In this case, the cashier working in the early morning hours at Goldberg's Bagel & Deli Company at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport couldn't be bothered with taking Joseph's name, instead going for a much simpler identifier: "Asian Guy." Joseph explains:

Academy Award for Best Original Song gives him the EGOT



Congratulations to songwriters Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, who won an Oscar for Best Original Song for "Let It Go," the hit single from the animated feature Frozen, at Sunday night's 86th Academy Awards. The big win apparently makes Lopez the first Filipino American to win an Oscar.

The response I received was overwhelming and wonderful.
