Whoa. Some frightening news out of New York, where an architect was arrested last month for allegedly planning to shoot co-workers at his company's office, after learning he was going to be fired.

N.Y.-based Korean interior designer arrested after threatening mass shooting

35-year-old Kon Jang, an employee at the design firm CetraRuddy, is accused of planning to stage a mass shooting at his workplace. According to police, a colleague alerted authorities when she heard Jang making threats, claiming he "had bought a gun, that he was planning something, that it was going to be a tragedy." He also reportedly had a diagram mapping out his victims in the office.

Remember Linsanity? Ah, February 2012. I remember it well. Sleepless nights of watching game replays, tracking down sports bars that were playing the Knicks games, my Facebook timeline lit up with countless links and comments about Jeremy Lin. That was fun. And New York City was ground zero for all of it.

Of course that eventually came to an end, and Jeremy Lin parted ways with the New York Knicks. This week, the current Houston Rocket guard was back in the city where it all started. Would Linsanity be a distant memory? Sports Illustrated thought it would be fun to set up a hidden camera while Jeremy hung out on a park bench and see if anyone recognized him. Former New York City sensation? Or just a random Asian dude on the street?

Jane Chu confirmed as NEA chairwoman

Will oversee the largest annual national supporter of the nonprofit arts in the United States


This week, the Senate confirmed Dr. Jane Chu as chairwoman of the National Endowment for the Arts. Chu is currently the president and CEO of the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts in Kansas City, Missouri.

A veteran arts administrator, Dr. Chu was nominated by President Obama for the NEA post in February. She fills a post that has been vacant for over year. Senior Deputy Chairman Joan Shigekawa had been acting chairman since Rocco Landesman stepped down in December 2012.

The NEA is the largest annual national supporter of the nonprofit arts in the United States. As chairwoman, Dr. Chu will oversee the federal funding of cultural organizations and programs that increase access to the arts.

Seth Rogen and James Franco are journalists enlisted to assassinate the North Korean dictator



Aaaaand here's the first teaser trailer for The Interview, starring Seth Rogen and James Franco. The movie also stars our good friend Randall Park... as none other than Kim Jong-Un, dictator of North Korea. Yup.

Franco and Rogen play a celebrity talk show host and producer who score the interview of a lifetime with Kim Jong-un. When they are approached by the CIA and asked to kill the elusive North Korean dictator, they become the least qualified men ever to carry out an assassination plot.

40th Anniversary Celebration of Agbayani Village

Saturday, June 21 in Delano, CA



If you're in or around California's Central Valley, you're invited to attend the 40th anniversary celebration of Agbayani Village, happening Saturday, June 21 in Delano, California.

The event will honor the Manongs, young men from the Philippines imported in the 1920s and 30s. Forbidden from marrying by law, they worked in the agricultural industry and helped lead the 1965 Delano Grape Strike. Agbayani Village was built for these heroic men to live out their final years.

The free event will include entertainment, live music by the Filipino Latin rock gropu Dakila, food, photo exhibitions, tours of the village, oral histories, and a ceremony to honor the Manongs and the volunteers that helped build Agbayani Village. Here are some more details about the event:

I've been aware of this project for some time, and given the premise, I've been pretty cautious. No doubt, Randall is my dude -- I'm sure he's damn hilarious in this movie -- and I will ride for him all day, every day. There's just an awful lot that can possibly go wrong with something like this. Here's hoping.

The Interview opens in theaters on October 10.

The timeless, international symbol for "chink"


This is Adriano Jauvel and Or Daniel. They are models or actors or something, and apparently enjoy some degree of celebrity in Israel. (As far as my research indicates, Ms. Daniel appeared on a season of the country's version of Big Brother.) During their recent travels to the Philippines, they decided to commemorate their layover at Seoul Incheon International Airport by taking this hi-larious photo and posting it on Instagram.

According to Facebook, the caption translates to "Trying to blend in with the landscape."

The photo apparently attracted the ire of many angry commenters, to the point that Daniels was compelled to change her Instagram settings to private. But the offending image can still be seen on Facebook.

Celebrity or otherwise, why are dumbass people around the world so eager to make this racist gesture -- the timeless, international symbol for "chink" -- in the presence of Asians?

Mayor caught on video tossing dog poo on neighbor's walkway

San Marino mayor Dennis Kneier threw a bag of shit on Philip Lao's property -- the "no poop zone"



Haahaaaaa. Gotcha, sucka! In Southern California, the mayor of San Marino has apologized after being caught on camera tossing a bag of dog waste on his neighbor's property. Yup. Caught on the crap cam.

Mayor Dennis Kneier was caught on surveillance video throwing a plastic bag full of dog feces onto the private walkway of his neighbor, Philip Lao. This was no accident. Lao believes that the mayor was upset with him for placing a "NO POOP ZONE" sign outside of his home, as well as his opposition to a proposed dog park nearby.

75-year-old man pleads insanity in double murder case

James Pak is accused of fatally shooting two teenagers over parking dispute



Follow-up on this story out of Maine... This week in York County Superior Court, a 75-year-old man pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity in the fatal shooting of two teenagers in December 2012.

Biddeford landlord pleads insanity in killing of teens

James Pak faces two counts of murder in the deaths of 19-year-Derrick Thompson and 18-year-old Alivia Welch, who were shot to death in the apartment where Thompson lived with his mother, who was also wounded in the shooting, but survived. According to authorities, Pak shot them after a dispute over parking.

Pak had initially pleaded not guilty last year to two counts of murder. He is also accused of aggravated attempted murder and elevated aggravated assault for allegedly shooting Johnson's mother, and burglary for breaking into the apartment.

Jeremy Lin recently visited HuffPost Live to talk about Linsanity, leaving the New York Knicks, and his charity work. The Houston Rocket guard admitted that he wasn't altogether comfortable with all the attention he received during the period that became known as "Linsanity," and acknowledged that he was hurt by the way the Knicks let him go at the end of the 2011-12 season.

Heads up. Do you have what it takes to rock with The Slants? After seven years of melting faces with three full-length albums and nearly two dozen tours and over 300 live shows around North America, the first and only all-Asian American Portland-based dance rock band is looking for a new lead singer.

The band wants a singer -- male or female -- who can kick ass with them as they spread their special brand of "Chinatown Dance Rock." You don't even have to live in the Portland area (though it's preferred). Here are some more details on who they're looking for:

Former employee says she was instructed to turn away customers who "sounded ghetto or too Asian."



In Dallas, an uptown bar is facing allegations of racist business practices, as some minority customers say they were denied entry based on a dress code, while white customers weren't held to the same standard. And according to a former employee, she was instructed to screen potential customers based on their ethnicity.

Stephanie Guidry, a former employee at the Kung Fu Saloon (yeah, seriously, epic eyeroll), says that she was told by managers to discern over the phone -- based on perceived accents -- whether customers attempting to make reservations "sounded ghetto or too Asian." If so, she was supposed to say the bar was booked.

Ian Anthony Dale is on the case in 'Murder in the First'

New cop drama premieres tonight on TNT



It's a scientific fact that Ian Anthony Dale is one of the most handsomest dudes on television. If you're interested in conducting more research on this scientific fact, then you'll be interested to know that Mr. Dale is in the new cable detective drama Murder in the First, which premieres tonight on TNT.

Created by Steven Bochco, Murder in the First, follows a pair of San Francisco homicide detectives, Terry English and Hildy Mulligan, as they investigate two seemingly unrelated murders. The mystery deepens, however, when they find both murders have a common denominator in a Silicon Valley wunderkind. The show follows the investigation over the course of one 10-episode season.

Ian stars as Hildy and Terry's superior in the homicide unit, Lieutenant Jim Koto, who is described as "an all-business lieutenant with movie-star good looks and a Stanford degree. He's no-nonsense, clear-thinking and never one to jump to conclusions. Koto is always diplomatic and the ultimate professional, but he possesses a caring heart."

Linda Cho wins Best Costume Design in a Musical for 'Gentlemen's Guide to Love & Murder'



The Tony Awards, presented by the American Theatre Wing, recognizes achievement in live Broadway theatre. So I was half-watching the 68th Tonys last night, noting the generally abysmal lack of Asian faces anywhere in the proceedings, particularly on stage. As expected. I think I spotted Lucy Liu in the audience. But then...

Congratulations to Linda Cho, who took home the trophy for Best Costume Design of a Musical, for her work on A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder, which was nominated in ten categories and won Best Musical. Here's the video for her acceptance speech, which was highlighted during the broadcast:

In honor of her lifetime of revolutionary activism, 18 Million Rising has launched a campaign to salute Yuri Kochiyama's legacy with her very own U.S. postage stamp. They've launched a petition asking the United States Post Office to create a stamp in honor:

California resolution apologizes for anti-Chinese legislation

State Senate calls on U.S. Congress to formally apologize for Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882



Well, isn't it about time? Last week, the California State Senate unanimously passed resolutions calling upon U.S. Congress to formally apologize for the enactment of the discriminatory Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, and formally apologizing for past California anti-Chinese legislation.

California Resolution for Apology to Chinese Americans Passes Unanimously

Senate Joint Resolution 23, as amended, is a request by the California Legislature to the Congress for the adoption of resolutions of apology to the Chinese American community for enactment of the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 and other similar Chinese Exclusion Laws.

Senate Concurrent Resolution 122 is a formal apology of the California State Legislature for the enactment of past discriminatory laws and anti-Chinese constitutional provisions that resulted increased restrictions and hardships on the Chinese living in California.

Both resolutions were unanimously by the State Senate on Thursday.

One dead, two injured in shooting at Seattle Pacific University

Shooter killed 19-year-old Paul Lee before getting tackled by another student



Damn. By now, you've heard of the shooting rampage that occurred at Seattle Pacific University. On Thursday afternoon, a gunman opened fire inside a campus hall, killing one student and injuring two others, one critically.

Student killed in Seattle Pacific shooting identified

The student killed in the shooting has been identified as 19-year-old Paul Lee, a freshman from the Portland area. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. The two injured victims remain hospitalized in stable condition.

The suspected shooter, identified as 26-year-old Aaron Ybarra, was ultimately tackled and subdued by a student. Jon Meis, who was working as a building monitor, pepper-sprayed Ybarra when he paused to reload his shotgun, then put him in a chokehold and took him to the ground. Other students and faculty members were able to hold the shooter down until police arrived.

Why We Need Diverse Books

Young adult author and educator Ellen Oh, founder of the #WeNeedDiverseBooks campaign, shares some of the personal reasons that compelled her call-to-arms for more diversity in contemporary literature.

So the first thing people ask me these days is how did the WeNeedDiverseBooks campaign come about? There's the basic answer -- the one about how I've been fighting for diversity and against racism for years. And then there's the series of events that all lead up to it. I haven't felt up to talking about the private stuff before. But I realize it is an important part of how I ended up here.

Earlier this year, my dad had a major stroke so severe that the doctors told my family to say our goodbyes. And then a miracle, he survived. But at what cost? He was paralyzed and his memory was so badly affected that he didn't remember our names, and sometimes even who we were.

As I tried to deal with the emotional turmoil in my personal life, I was overwhelmed by a feeling of helplessness. I couldn't fix my father. And the help I could give felt useless. I didn't know what to do but I focused on supporting my mother with my dad. It was in the midst of my personal despair that news about the BookCon Blockbuster's Read program hit Twitter and I remember talking to Malinda Lo about the continued lack of representation at these major book events. We kept talking about it and I began to feel a growing rage within me. And then something just snapped. I was just so angry and frustrated and feeling so helpless. I just wanted to hit something. I just needed to do something. I needed to channel my rage into something positive. And I kept saying over and over again "We need to do something really big. So big that no one can ignore us anymore." There were quite a few people who scoffed at me. Told me I was wasting my time. However, there was even more people who came to me and said, "What do you want to do? I'm in!"

So I guess we know what Daniel Dae Kim is up to this summer... The Hawaii Five-0 and Lost star has joined the cast of the movie Insurgent, the sequel to Divergent, based on the popular young adult novel series.

The Divergent series, based on the books by author Veronica Roth, is a sci-fi action tale set in a dystopian society that divides people into distinct factions based on human virtues. Shailene Woodley plays Tris Prior, who is warned that she is "Divergent" and won't fit in any one group. When she discovers a conspiracy by a faction leader to destroy all Divergents, she must find out what makes being Divergent so dangerous before it's too late. I had to look up all of this information on Wikipedia.

Daniel will play Jack Kang, the representative of Candor, the faction of honesty. To learn more about this character, I looked up the "Jack Kang" entry on the Divergent Wiki:

Man assaulted on train for speaking Bengali

Muslim victim harassed, assaulted and accused of being a terrorist on Virginia commuter train



News of a hate crime out of the DC area... In Fairfax, Virginia, a man is accused of harassing and attacking a Muslim man on a commuter train last month because the victim was speaking on his cell phone in Bengali.

58-year-old government worker Patrick Sullivan apparently became agitated because the victim, an unnamed Muslim man, was talking on the phone to his wife in his native language of Bengali. According to police, Sullivan began shouting at the man, telling him to speak English. He then hit the man in the head and tried to get him thrown off the train, suggesting to the conductor that the man was a possible terrorist.

Burglars busted after posting stolen loot on social media

Thieves targeted multiple Indian communities across California and Nevada



In Southern California, police have arrested multiple suspects in connection with a sophisticated burglary ring that has been targeting Indian communities in California and Nevada for gold, jewelry and cash.

According to investigators, the thieves are connected to a Long Beach street gang who used the internet and other sources to find their victims, specifically targeting Indian homes in multiple counties across Southern and Northern California, as well as Nevada. They gained the trust of their targets, found out when residents would be away from their homes, then made off with gold, jewelry, cash and other valuables.

The suspects burglarized over a hundred homes in about a year.

Sex predator terrorized Asian teens in Indianapolis

31-year-old Danny Cherry used Facebook to solicit sexual favors from minors



This is some creepy, disturbing news out of Indianapolis, where an online sex predator faces felony charges for terrorizing several teenagers -- all Asian boys -- with threats, harassment and stalking that turned into violence.

According to police, 31-year-old Danny Cherry is accused in multiple instances of targeting young members of the Chin community, an ethnic minority from Burma with a large presence in the Indianapolis area. It began on Facebook, where Cherry befriended boys by posing as an Asian teen, then began sending sexually explicit and threatening messages and attempting to solicit sexual favors from minors.

But it didn't stop there. It escalated. In several cases, Cherry is accused of stalking and showing up at the homes of his victims. Earlier this year, he shot a boy's father in the face:

Ken Leung is working 'The Night Shift'

New medical drama airs Tuesday nights on NBC



Forgot to mention this last week, but one of my favorite actors is on a new TV show... Ken Leung is in the starring cast of The Night Shift, the new medical drama on NBC. The show follows an irreverent team of men and women who work the toughest and wildest cases -- the night shift -- at San Antonio Memorial Hospital.

Ken plays Topher, "a quick-witted free spirit who knows how to manipulate the system in his favor. He will do whatever it takes to save a patient's life... and keep his best friend TC out of trouble." I've been a fan of Mr. Leung for years, and it's great to get a chance to see him regularly on the TV again.

The Adjustment Bureau director George Nolfi has signed on to direct the Bruce Lee "biopic" Birth of the Dragon, an upcoming action movie inspired by one of the legendary martial artist's most infamous real-life fights. The story of the match is told from the perspective of Steve Macklin. Wait, who the hell is Steve Macklin?

Birth of the Dragon is inspired by the true story of Lee's historic 1965 Oakland duel with kung fu master Wong Jack Man -- a fight that's already been fodder for considerable mythmaking over the years. According to Variety, this tale is told from the perspective of Steve Macklin, a fictional young disciple of Lee, who ultimately joins forces with Lee and Wong to battle a vicious band of Chinatown gangsters. Um, okay.

An icon has passed. Legendary activist, educator and humanitarian Yuri Kochiyama, whose mentorship and fierce, lifelong dedication to justice inspired generations of movement makers, has died. According to her family, she passed away peacefully in her asleep on Sunday morning in Berkeley, California. She was 93.

Japanese-American Activist And Malcolm X Ally Dies At 93

Born Mary Yuriko Nakahara to Japanese immigrants in 1921, Kochiyama's life of radical activism was sparked as a young woman after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, when she and her family were among the thousands of Japanese Americans who were incarcerated by the U.S. government during World War II. Her experiences in the camps would later fuel her involvement in future struggles for racial justice.

Toddler severely injured by grenade during police raid

19-month-old Bounkham Phonesavanh was sleeping when police tossed a "flash bang" into his crib



This is a horrifying story out of Georgia, where a toddler is in a medically-induced coma after being severely burned by a police "flash bang" grenade that was thrown in his crib during a late night drug raid.

19-month-old Bounkham Phonesavanh and his family were sleeping at their relatives' house, visiting from Wisconsin, when a police team burst into the home early Wednesday morning. They were acting on an informant's tip that he had purchased methamphetamine at the house earlier in the day.

An officer tossed a flash bang -- used as a distraction device -- that landed in the child's playpen and detonated in his face. Bounkham, or "BouBou," suffered massive burns on his face and chest.

Authorities did not make any arrests, nor did they find anything at the house during the raid.

Amid mounting criticism and calls for his ousting, Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric K. Shinseki has resigned, apologizing to veterans and lawmakers for the agency's mismanagement of the nation's veterans hospitals.

Shinseki resigns amid VA scandal over veterans' health care

Calls for Shinseki's resignation had intensified in the wake of an independent review by the inspector general outlining widespread misconduct by VA officials throughout the medical system. With rapidly dwindling support from across the political spectrum, including the White House, Shinseki's resignation seemed inevitable.

In a speech Friday morning to a veterans group, Shinseki apologized and accepted responsibility for his agency's "systemic, totally unacceptable lack of integrity." He then met with President Obama, who said he accepted the retired Army general's resignation "with regret."

Indie documentary explores the stories and struggles of Asian American rappers



Wait... there are Asian American rappers? YES. And somebody is making a documentary about them. Bad Rap is an independent feature documentary about the obstacles and successes of Asian American rappers, their history, and four friends coming up in the game.

Directed and produced by Salima Koroma, the film follows a few emcees you might have heard of: Dumbfoundead, Awkwafina, Rekstizzy and Lyricks, and includes interviews with several accomplished Asian American rap artists. The project is currently in the throes of a crowdfunding campaign to finish the feature.
